More on KNOPPIX, now I've had a quick play. For the professional geek, this absolutely rocks. It's a bootable Linux CD-ROM that actually runs the OS from the CD. Significantly, local disk partitions are mounted on a RAMdrive, and Knoppix supports network connectivity in most cases, so if you have a broken machine, just boot the CD and copy the files off over the LAN.
The previous post details how to use removable storage as a home drive, so armed with a USB pen and a CD you can use absolutely any PC to work from.
We like this a lot.

Been playing with printing on Linux today. Using the RH 8.0 config tool to set up LPR stuff was pretty easy, but printing across the network from a Mac is a pain. SMB printing via Samba is fine from WinXP, but a nightmare from Mac, and TCP printing from Mac OS X prompts you to use CUPS drivers. So, I am now trying CUPS, and it is a pain in the arse, to be blunt. I have an Epson Stylus Color 660 - not exactly a weird, uncommon printer - and I can't even get a test page to come out right - the black is such a light grey that text doesn't even appear on the page.
Arse.

Finally worked out how to mount a USB pendrive under Red Hat 8.0.
